The West African Diaspora and Urban Kiz Education Project is a critical cultural intervention designed to combat the cultural erasure and displacement of Austin's Black and African diasporic communities, particularly in East Austin, which are rapidly losing their cultural heritage due to gentrification.
Our project focuses on preserving and promoting the traditions of West African dance, with a special emphasis on Kizomba and Urban Kiz, by providing accessible and inclusive dance education. Through this project, we aim to foster cultural pride, build community resilience, and promote mental health and healing, particularly for veterans, trauma survivors, and mixed-ability dancers.
This project is fiscally sponsored by Fisterra Projects.
