Accessibility, Inclusion & Safety
Across Divergence in 2023 & 2024, and later Convergence in 2025, Ginga Productions helped build inclusive, empowering, & culturally connected dance experiences that keep Brazilian Zouk accessible to dancers with different abilities. Convergence was created in just 48 hours, showing the group’s ability to mobilize quickly while still keeping accessibility, care, & cultural connection at the center. This work sample features instructors dancing with a dedicated Zouk dancer with cerebral palsy who has trained with at least 12 festival teachers. Her presence at these events shows how adaptive dance expands creativity, awareness, & a deeper understanding of connection across the whole community.
Beyond individual inclusion, this work has grown in more systemic ways. Ginga Productions is developing DJ training programming with the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, creating opportunities centered on rhythm, listening, spatial awareness, & musical interpretation. Programming also incorporates certified DanceAbility instructors, helping ensure that dancers with different mobility or sensory needs can participate fully & thrive in dance spaces.
Language accessibility is also a priority. Marketing materials are provided in Portuguese & Spanish, & because festival teachers are fluent in Portuguese, a dedicated Spanish translator is present at every event. This makes workshops & discussions more accessible to Austin’s diverse Latinx & international communities.
Safety & consent are treated as active practices, not side notes. Each hour of the festival includes designated safety monitors available to participants, creating clear points of support throughout the event. Organizers, instructors, & community advocates also work together to strengthen practices that help keep dance spaces inclusive, respectful, & safe for all participants. This work includes Accessibility & Inclusion Networking gatherings where organizers & participants share strategies for making social dance spaces more welcoming, responsive, & culturally grounded.
By integrating accessibility, language inclusion, & proactive safety practices, Divergence in 2023 & 2024, together with Convergence in 2025, did more than make room for diverse dancers. These events helped model a future for social dance rooted in equity, empowerment, & meaningful cultural connection.
