Preserving Cumbia’s Legacy in East Austin

Founded by Daniel Hernandez, Cumbia Movement is dedicated to preserving and evolving the rich traditions of cumbia while fostering a dynamic, intergenerational dance community in Austin. As the producer of Cumbia Bajo La Luna, Austin’s only fully accessible outdoor cumbia dance series, Daniel ensures that Latinx artists, immigrant musicians, and diverse audiences have an inclusive space to celebrate culture through dance and music.

In 2023, Cumbia Movement hosted performances at key cultural venues across East Austin, reinforcing its deep connection to the city’s artistic and Latinx communities:

  • Sahara Lounge (1413 Webberville Rd, Austin, TX 78721) – A globally recognized venue supporting diverse music traditions, where Cumbia Movement brought high-energy performances and community dance gatherings.

  • Hotel Vegas (1502 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78702) – A staple in Austin’s live music scene, featuring Cumbia Movement’s fusion of traditional and contemporary cumbia rhythms.

  • Ken Dorian’s Backyard (East Austin) – A grassroots cultural space dedicated to uplifting local and immigrant musicians, fostering intimate, community-driven music experiences.

Raíces y Ritmos - A Fully Accessible Cultural Experience

Cumbia Bajo La Luna prioritizes accessibility at every level, ensuring inclusive participation for all community members. Under the guidance of Angela Gohokar, a recognized leader in corporate accessibility initiatives and higher education inclusivity training, the event exemplifies best practices in language accessibility, disability accommodations, and sensory inclusion.

Angela's extensive professional expertise in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and talent development at Dell Technologies has uniquely informed our accessibility strategy. As a global lead for Dell’s Employee Resource Groups, Angela spearheads programs supporting veterans, disability inclusion, neurodivergent communities, and global cultural intelligence, bringing strategic leadership and hands-on experience to ensure that Cumbia Bajo La Luna is authentically inclusive.

Angela’s experience teaching blind students and her active role as a University Adjunct Professor inform our accessibility offerings, which include:

  • Spanish-Language Inclusion: All programming is fully bilingual, presented seamlessly in Spanish and English, breaking language barriers and welcoming the entire Latinx community.

  • ASL Interpretation: Professional interpreters provide American Sign Language interpretation, ensuring full participation for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing attendees.

  • Mobility-Friendly Design: Spacious, wheelchair-accessible dance floors and clearly marked seating areas allow ease of movement for those with mobility challenges.

  • Sensory-Friendly Accommodations: Quiet areas and designated sensory spaces accommodate neurodiverse participants, making the event comfortable for all attendees.

This comprehensive accessibility approach aligns seamlessly with Angela’s professional mission—cultivating diverse and inclusive environments both corporately at Dell Technologies and within the broader Austin community.
